The Campground
Our first impression was honestly shock in the best way possible. After checking in at the bottom of the hill, you make your way up to the upper section of the campground where most of the RV sites are located. From there, the view opens up over the lake and surrounding hills, and it’s the kind of moment that makes you stop and just take it in.
The campground is split between a lower section, which has a mix of RV spots and modular homes, and an upper section where most RVers will stay. The upper area also holds the main amenities like the pool and activity areas.
Level: Close to level
Spacing: Good space between sites
Access: Easy overall, but be mindful of the hills when navigating
Sites are mostly dirt with grass around them, which fits the more traditional camping feel. Roads throughout the park are primarily concrete and easy to navigate.
Amenities include:
Bike trails
Swimming pool and hot tub
Fishing and lake access
Beach area and boat ramp
Canoeing
Playground
Volleyball, basketball, and horseshoes
Laundry facilities
Restroom and shower facilities
We used the restrooms during our stay and found them clean and well-maintained.
The standout feature here is easily the views. The combination of the lake and the rolling hills creates a peaceful setting that’s hard to beat. It felt quiet, relaxing, and never overcrowded.
One of the more unexpected highlights of this stay was meeting an amazing couple while walking around the campground. What started as a simple conversation quickly turned into a connection, and it’s since grown into a great friendship over time. Moments like that are a big part of what makes this lifestyle so special.
The only minor note is that one of the pools near the office is permanently closed, but it didn’t take away from the overall experience.
Local Eats
During our stay, we grabbed a quick meal from Hy-Vee’s Market Grille nearby.
We had spicy General Tso chicken with noodles. It had good flavor, though it had been sitting out for a bit and was slightly dried out, similar to what you might expect from a buffet.
While that meal was just okay, the grocery options in the area stood out more than anything.
If you’re nearby, we’d recommend checking out:
Woodman’s Market (Onalaska): Huge selection and a massive liquor store
Hy-Vee (Onalaska): Great grocery store with made-to-order food, sushi, pizza, and more
The Drive & Area
The drive into the campground is exactly what you’d hope for in this part of Wisconsin. It’s scenic, with rolling hills and winding country roads that make the trip feel relaxing rather than stressful.
Roads were in good condition
Traffic was minimal
No tight turns or clearance concerns
Towing in was easy overall, just take your time with the hills.
West Salem itself is a smaller town with limited options, mostly gas stations and a few restaurants. For anything more, you’ll want to head to Onalaska or La Crosse, both of which are a short drive away.
Connectivity
We tested T-Mobile during our stay.
Cell signal: Good
Data speeds: Usable, not the fastest
Starlink: Worked well
Obstructions: Minor tree coverage
We worked during the week and streamed in the evenings without any major issues. This is a campground where you can stay connected if needed, even if speeds are not top-tier.
Would We Stay Again?
Yes, without hesitation.
This is one of those places we talk about often. The views alone make it worth coming back, and it’s the kind of campground where you wish you had planned a longer stay.
We originally stopped here while passing through on the way to Minnesota, but next time, we’d stay longer just to enjoy the scenery and slower pace.
